The largest hazardous waste landfill in Middle East has been officially closed with members of the UN and Kuwait Oil Company Senior Staff visiting the site to inspect the completed works. The landfill which is the largest haxzardous waste landfill in the region holds over 2,000,000m3 of oil contaminated sand which has been removed from oil lakes as part of the worlds largest remediation project referred to as KERP (Kuwait Environmental Remediation Programme).
Construction of the facility was undertaken between 2014 and 2015 with closure works taking place in autumn 2017. The landfill is designed to international standards and comprises a double composite geosynthetic lining system along with and mineral lining system.
